Inspired by the influx of interest in learning to sew and dressmaking that the Great British Sewing bee generated, we've revamped some of our classes!

 

Our new body measurements and pattern working classes are designed to make you all into expert home dressmakers!

From taking correct body measurements, to understanding the jargon in pattern instructions, and even adapting a commercial pattern to create your ideal fit, these courses have been created to help you make gorgeous garments. To select sewing patterns you need to know your correct body measurements, so you can make sense of the size charts and select the right size. You also need to take accurate body measurements when altering clothes for yourself or others. This workshop is aimed at those who want to understand how and where to take body measurements to achieve the perfect fit. You will be shown how to measure the body and be a given a size chart to record your size. We will also cover any personal problem areas you have and difficulties with size and fit when buying or making clothes. The workshop will also explain the meaning of tolerance and ease when fitting, the use of a tailors dummy and the purpose and benefits of making a toile. See this course on our site here.

Those new to sewing as well as those with more experience will benefit from this workshop on how to use a commercial pattern. The workshop will cover pattern brands, where to purchase pattern and how to download free patterns from the internet. It will also cover how to choose the right level of pattern for your skills, how to understand the back of the pattern envelope, how to judge the right size to cut and the correct amount of fabric to buy. You will also learn to how follow the information sheet, the layout plan and gain an understanding of pattern instructions and terminology, pattern markings and annotations including grain lines, seam allowance, notches and bias cutting. Finally you will be shown how to lay the pattern on different types of fabric including checks, plaids, fabrics with nap or one way prints, stripes etc. You’ll learn how to pin, mark, cut the pattern and fabric and prepare your garment ready for construction. This course is aimed at those wanting to make clothes from a commercial pattern and adapt the pattern to fit their own shape and size. The tutor will demonstrate how to make simple alterations and adaptations to lengthen or shorten the pattern. She will also explain how to adapt a pattern to fit you own personal body shape. This could be adjusting a pattern to accommodate larger hips or bust or how to increase or decrease a waistline etc. You can bring a pattern along that you would like to work on.
